When Does Eye Catching Turn Into Cluttered?

I do like the living space you see in this picture, but just barely.  There does come a time when too much stuff in a room is really just clutter, but this room seems to strike a balance.  It’s very close mind you, and to a minimalist, this may seem like sacrilege, but that’s OK.  We all see beauty a little differently, and in this case we’re just going to have to agree to disagree.

Sure you see a lot of styles here, but that likely just represents a variety of life experiences.  After all, the stuff we surround ourselves with is usually a reflection of what we’ve been doing with our lives.  I like the wood tones, always have.  Pretty much every room (with the exceptions of bathrooms) have some kind of wood grains and textures involved.  The textures are quite different here.  Just take a look at the difference between the flooring, the table, and the side wall storage unit.  There are difference in both tones and grain directions. That’s fine and visually interesting.

It doesn’t get monotonous, because there are a few pieces here that jump out at you, and break up the wood patterns.  The red couch and storage unit in the lower right obviously jump to mind, but there are other pieces as well.  The white light with the arching / hanging arm help as well.  While white may not be a stunning color, the abstract nature of the light is what makes it grab your attention.

I wouldn’t want to see much more added to this room, as it’s got plenty to keep the eyes busy.  As a matter of fact, many interesting pieces are not getting the attention they deserve.  One solution would be to move some pieces out, but there is another.  This is the kind of space, that just screams for rearranging.  Not out of necessity, but simply for variety.  An advantage of having so much stuff here, is that you can move it around quite a bit from time and time, and make the space seem fresh again.  That’s good, since you can give the focus to different pieces over time.  It should be a constantly evolving and changing space.
