What Makes Homes Interesting?

It’s a very personal thing our homes that is.  What is it that looks beautiful and interesting to one person may look horrendous to another.  In my current example illustrated in the picture below, I happen to find it personally interesting and pleasing to the eye.  It’s  a very eclectic mix to be sure, but that’s OK, as I prefer the mix of various style points.

The wooded carved animal (buffalo?) next to a set of childrens alphabet building blocks is a very unusual choice, but one that works quite well here.  It suggests, that the owner or designer has in interest in both children and African animals.  Perhaps they lived in Africa before returning home to domestic life to start a family.  Sounds like an interesting person to me.

Interesting is important to me in home design.  Not that it should trump function, but I believe the two can coexist together quite peacefully.  Let’s move a little further down visually, and see if we can find a few more contrasting items that make this space more inviting.

The retro style table/chair combination next to a storage unit with a computer printer are quite dissimilar but tantalizingly appropriate.  While the chairs at the table may not be suited for long term seating they do provide a scenic view of the lush outdoor greenery which is brought a little closer indoors by the placement of a few house plants on the table.  The technology of the printer is definitely generations away from when this kind of table was in vogue, but still obviously holds a personal feel for the owner of this room.  I’m sensing they are probably middle age or a little older, and still like the nostalgic feel of the table, but need the technological advantages offered by the present.

A room / space / home can say a lot about the person who owns it or lives there.  And that’s important.  My home and rooms are filled with all kinds of things that speak to me, my family, and my friends.  I like that.
